I am back at Netflix!
I am hiring (naturally). I am specifically looking for some talented user interface engineers to join my team. My team builds the experience for acquiring new members. We are at a critical phase as we expand internationally while supporting a wide range of devices. You can check out the job posting here.
I can't think of a better recommendation for Netflix than the fact that I have returned :-D
Why would I return? First a little about why I left.
In my previous position at Netflix the team had gotten large (15+) and was on a growth path to be 25 or 30. I no longer could be involved in the details as my group spanned every part of the Netflix business. It was a fantastic position -- really a dream job. But at the end of the day I needed to be more a part of the solution.
So I left Netflix and became the VP of Engineering & UX at Meebo. Meebo is really a stellar place. But after just a couple of months I realized I had moved in the wrong direction. And it became clear to me that all of the positions opening to me where at a level that mostly dealt with the organizational challenges with some limited high level strategy. So while Meebo was really a great place to work I knew that I had to figure out what level I wanted to work at.
After that I started consulting. During that phase I learned a lot about myself and how I want to spend my time. Consulting was especially rewarding as I had some amazing clients (PayPal, Adobe, Rypple and BagCheck to name a few). I got to do product strategy consulting, UX design (lots of wireframing) and JavaScript development. The most rewarding part was being hands on solving problems. And of course working with Theresa Neil (my co-author) was a blast.
During that time I was presented with a lot of really great opportunities by companies I respect deeply. After I started considering full time employment again I realized that I was happiest at Netflix. And coincidentally I had been giving recommendations to Netflix on people that I could recommend for a new role there. Then it dawned on me, why not offer myself for that role? And that is what I did.
My new role is much more focused than my previous role. I am the Director of ECommerce UI Engineering. Instead of leading all of the user interface engineers at Netflix, I am leading a smaller (but growing team) that is focused on solving specific problems on the marketing/customer acquisition/account side of the house. The cool thing is the solutions our team fields directly impact the growth of Netflix & the dollars that come in the door. Plus I am able to get much more involved in the day to day work of the product.
The bottom line: My recommendation couldn't be stronger for coming to Netflix. I believed in it so much that I decided to return. It's an amazing brand and we are poised for more amazing growth.
So want to join me? Check out the job description. Is that you or anyone you know? If so don't hesitate to apply or ping me at bscott _at_ netflix _dot_ com.

Really Super Cool Job Opening @ Netflix
Update: Position is filled.
We are looking for the following engineer:
This is a research opportunity on a small team trying to build the next generation of the Netflix user experience. The team is comprised of a designer, a UI engineer, a product manager and you. You’ll be working quickly to prototype and research user interaction models for new platforms for the Netflix service. At Netflix we intend to get our electronic movie delivery service to every screen hooked up to the internet. Many of those screens will require a very different site experience, and you will be part of this small team crafting that experience here at Netflix.
To this challenge you’ll bring strong Java, server and scalable systems development. You will need to help move our server architecture forward to allow for us to leverage existing personalization technology on brand new platforms. As the only software engineer on this team, you will be driving the server architecture powering this user interaction research.
Also, we need a really awesome analyst for tearing into all of our A/B testing data. You would be working with our Sr. Analyst, Lisa Mesh.
If you know of anyone that fits either of these jobs please contact me: b dot scott at yahoo dot com.

We are Hiring
Ok, so I am still new at Netflix. But thought it might be interesting to write up my first impressions.
Sean Kane, my predecessor did a really great job of helping me understand the culture so there have been no surprises. No surprises, but a good bit of delight.
Here are some of the ways I would sum up what I have seen so far.
Treated Like Adults
This is a really important cultural trait. It starts with salary. You choose the mix of $ to equity and have the flexibility to switch it around from year to year. We pay extremely well (hey we even brag about it on the site). But it goes beyond that. It works it's way into HR, recruiting and all the other parts of the company that in other places tend to be out of sync. We don't make a bunch of rules. The HR policy manual is extremely small.
Transparency
There is an amazing amount of transparency of how the business is run as well as successes and failures. This makes it a great place to learn and thrive.
Blend of Science & Art
Truly it is consumer science here. A lot of experimenting and analysis. It is very intriguing to work at a place that really gets the importance of a great interface as well as balances it with the realities of business.
And did I mention that we have some of the most incredible work policies and pay anywhere in the country? And we are doing very well?
Ok, so we are hiring!
I am looking to fill two positions immediately on my team.
Sr. Staff UI Engineer
This is a senior position in which you will work closely with me and my team of engineers to improve, architect and code integral solutions that impact the whole site. This is a really key role that will take our site to the next level from a web development best practices, performance and infrastructure perspective.
Senior User Interface Engineer – Customer Service
This is a new position that we are opening up this week. In this role you will help re-design and engineer a new web based customer support center. We will put the same care in this site that we do with the main Netflix site. Many of the ideas, solutions may find there way into the general Netflix site as well. If you love building great web applications then please give me a ping.
Other Positions in Other Teams
Adrian Cockcroft, former Sun Distinguished Engineer and eBay research labs member is just one of the luminaries here at Netflix. Adrian has two immediate openings on his team.
Creative Director.
Yes, we are looking for a talented creative director to work directly with with our VP of Product Management, Gibson Biddle, on taking design for Netflix to a whole new level. Up for the challenge? Let me know.
Sr. Marketing Graphic Designer
Barry Enderwick is looking for a talented graphic designer to work in his team. Barry's team creates the brand, the advertising, the badges, the printed material, etc. If you are a graphic designer this is an awesome opportunity to work on one of the most recognized brands in America.
For all of these positions, feel free to email me. You can reach me at b dot scott at yahoo dot com.

Netflix Here I Come!
Over the last 2+ years I have had the honor and pleasure of working for one of the greatest companies on the planet and with some of the greatest designers & engineers on the planet.
Yahoo! has been a great place for me. I learned a lot. Feel like I contributed a lot. I have had an honored position as a mouthpiece (a genuine one) for Yahoo!
Now its time to move on to the next challenge.
I am excited to announce that I will be joining Netflix as the Director of UI Engineering. Netflix is one of the most amazing companies to work for. And I think the most exciting days are ahead for Netflix. The challenge of digital delivery is something that I think they (we) are ready for.
I am succeeding the excellent Sean Kane who is in stealth mode, co-founding a new startup. I wish Sean amazing success and am looking forward to applying my talents and energies to the world of movies!

New Role: In the Trenches
So as the new year came round I start re-evaluating what it was I wanted to do at Yahoo! I have had an amazing 1.5 years here getting a chance to launch the public design pattern library, doing evangelism for Yahoo!, creating some components and working on some cool projects inside Yahoo!
As I looked at 2007 I could see that a number of opportunities still existed for me to go out and speak. In fact I had about a dozen events already in play through the middle of June.
Sometime last year I began helping (part-time) with technology and design consultation for a new Yahoo! site. I am not at liberty to announce the product at this time but at the first of the year I was offered the chance to become the engineering manager for this team. The product is an awesome idea and it promises to "do good" for our society. So with a passion for the goal, the product, the team and the challenges, it was a no-brainer for me to decide to step out of the evangelism role and take on the challege of putting into practice all the things I have been talking so much about. It's time to get in the trenches!
I am leaving a very talented evangelism team to join another extremely talented team that I feel honored to work with here in Sunnyvale. The current engineering team (in Bangalore) is doing an incredibly awesome job getting the first version of the product ready.
My management graciously offered (even encouraged) me to continue my speaking adventures. But I decided that in order to have sanity in my life and in order to do the best job for the product I would pull back from speaking and put my head down into this project. I subsequently canceled most of the events lined up and at this point I think I only have one event left to speak at this year.
I am considering taking the material from my talks and putting it into a book or ebook. But in the meanwhile I think the best thing is to start writing a series of blog posts that capture the current thinking I have on the topic of design patterns, principles and practices. Also I will be posting my RIA Best Practices talk from the Web Apps Conference in Monterey, CA on slideshare.
The other big news is Yahoo! was fortunate to have recruited Christian Crumlish as the new Yahoo! Design Pattern Curator. Watch the yuiblog and the ypatterns site for cool stuff coming out from Erin Malone & Christian!

Me on Google Earth!
Ok, the ultimate vanity search :-)
Back at Foo Camp, O'Reilly contracted to have a plane fly over and take 3" resolution images for inclusion in Google Earth. It happened on Saturday, the first full day of camp.

Gregor Hohpe from Google & I decided it would be cool to lay out on the lawn and let the plane get a good look at us sprawled out on the campus. I tried to convince him to lay with his legs together and his hands spread out above in the form of a Y (for Yahoo!) but he didn't bite ;-)
Here's a closeup shot of us on the campus. I am the one outlined in red, Greg is in blue.

If you care to check out the Foo Camp shot, it's located at:
Latitude: 38°24'40.46"N; Longitude: 122°50'25.59"W

Wanted: Pattern Curator for Yahoo! Library
As many of you know one of my jobs at Yahoo! has been as Yahoo! Design Pattern Curator. My main contribution in this role has been (along with the incredible help of Erin Malone, Annette Leong, Leslie Wang, David Gan, Greg Rosenberg, Jay Bergesen, Ben Clemens, Kiersten Lammerding and Lance Nishihira -- to name a few) to launch the public Yahoo! Design Pattern Library. (Of course I must also mention the incredible work of Matt Leacock, Erin Malone and Chanel Wheeler in launching the internal pattern library before I joined Yahoo!)
The library has meant a lot to various folks in the community. I have heard over and over at various talks I have given the gratitude to Yahoo! for opening up the pattern library to the public. As an example, recently in Portugal I had several design/engineering teams personally thank me for this library.
The library has also attracted some great talent to Yahoo! We have heard consistently from recruits coming into Yahoo! that the library was a big attraction to their checking Yahoo! out.
The job involves working with properties/sites across Yahoo! evangelizing the internal and external adoption of patterns. If this excites you, then we have the perfect job for you! Or perhaps you can recommend that perfect person...
Here is the email from Erin Malone (who could ask for a better person to work with?) posting this position.
I have a really important and interesting position on my team here at Yahoo! This position is a result of an internal transfer to another role which opens up great opportunities for you!
Rather than post the full long bulletted list of the job description I have presented here a brief overview of the role in the hopes that the excitement that I feel about the role comes through. Please feel free to ping me for the full description or if you have questions or if you want to send me resume.
ABOUT THE TEAM - PLATFORM DESIGN
Platform Design at Yahoo! supports the Platform Products Group and is responsible for the development of NETWORK standards, the PATTERN Libraries, solutions and components for the UI WIDGET Library, for the PERSONALIZATION platform, for intertwining COMMUNITY across the network and for MEMBERSHIP touchpoints across the network. Our team consists of Interaction Designers, Visual Designers, User Researchers and Developers. Team members work closely with other cross functional people from Product Management, Marketing, Engineering, QA, and others across the company.
THE JOB:
CURATE THE YAHOO! PATTERN LIBRARY
Yahoo!'s Platform User Experience Design team is looking for a new curator for the Pattern Library. The curator works with designers from across Yahoo! to develop new patterns and to eventually migrate a pattern to the public library. You will be responsible for spotting trends in the designs of our properties, for designing and crafting new additions to the library and for evangelizing the authorship of new patterns among your Interaction Designer colleagues.
You will partner with our Platform Presentation Engineering team to create interactions and best practices that accompany the UI Widget Library. Additionally, you will own the external Public Pattern Library and develop the pattern lifecycle from internal to external libraries. And last but not least, you will be the spearhead and driver for a new addition to our Library suite - a new Terms Library and will work closely with our internal editorial team.
Please respond to me directly with resume and links to work.

thanks
Erin Malone
If you are interested, feel free to ping me via email. You can reach me at b dot scott at yahoo dot com and I will get you in contact with Erin & the right parties.
BTW, I will still be 'yapping' about patterns. I will still be evangelizing the patterns. It's part of my blood. Whoever takes this role should know that I look forward to supporting them and helping them in this role as much as possible.

Changing Jobs - New Challenges
Well it is with a mixture of sadness and excitement that I had my last day at Sabre this past Friday. Sadness, because I leave behind many friends and colleagues that I greatly respect. Excitement because of the opportunities ahead.
As I told those at my farewell party, I have had an absolute blast working there over the last 3 years. It has been challenging and rewarding working to establish a user experience team as part of the normal process within Sabre. I have been fortunate to have had great folks around me. And the really good news is that the team is well positioned to continue the momentum and do greater things with the new leadership coming into that team.
My new challenge is far from Texas where Sabre is based and where I have lived most of my life. I am joining the Yahoo Platform User Experience team (in Sunnyvale, CA). I have the interesting title of Designer/Ajax Evangelist and am looking forward to some really exciting work in the days ahead.
So what was it that got me interested in moving my family across the country, entering the crazy CA real estate market and leave an incredible job at Sabre?
It really came down to a strong gut feeling. First, the job pulls from so many things I have done in the past yet reaches into a number of unknown challenges. Second, I was amazed by the team of folks involved. One of the things I look for when creating a team or joining a team is the incredible mix of passion + brilliance + humility. That is not an easy balance to strike. The secret is to realize that the ideas are a team effort and the competition is outside the organization. I am very excited about what Yahoo is doing and will be doing in the future and am thankful for the opportunity to make a contribution there.
As for Rico, the effort is growing. Darren is being given a full-time role within Sabre to work on Rico. I hopefully (given time constraints of a new job) will continue to play an important role in the Rico project. Richard Cowin will continue his role as co-collaborator with Darren. Jacques Morel is also from Sabre and has recently joined the effort. Others are starting to join as contributors and there are some exciting talks happening around ways to expand the Rico effort.
My thanks and appreciation goes to David Endicott, VP Development Sabre Airline Solutions. He is an awesome guy to work for! And thanks to Brad Jensen my former VP who brought me to Sabre with his passion for usability.
